Updates

0513131627b

A few weeks ago I decided that I would try and get a lot of the “business side” of the business set up before I open my Etsy Shop.  I figured this would help me stay organized and get all the pesky things done, so that I can focus on the “creative side” of the business.  Of course I will still have to do bookkeeping, inventory, and the like once up and running, but the big stuff will be taken care of.

It sounds nerdy and lame, but I am pretty pumped that I got my EIN, I registered under a fictitious name, I opened a business bank account to keep the finances in order, and I received my Sales Tax License.  I have a few other things to do like set up my bookkeeping system, start a facebook page, order shipping supplies, print Business Cards, photograph finished products, and create listings.  Phew that sounds like a lot, but totally doable.

In the meantime, I also worked on a few bags.  I most definitely want to have more ready to list by the time I open, but if not I can always list them later.  I have a big goal.  Sometimes I try to trick myself with my goals.  For instance, my intended date for the Grand Opening is June 1st.  I am going to try with all my might to make that happen.  I pretty much gave myself a month, which to some may seem like a lot of time, but I know what I want to accomplish and what I have to do, and a month isn’t really that much time.  But I knew that if I set the date further on down the road it would give me an excuse to procrastinate and I have procrastinated long enough.  If I don’t make it June 1st, and I sure am going to try, I won’t beat myself.  I’ll just open June 2nd;)

All my self trickery makes me think of that cheesy quote that goes something like this “Reach for the moon, because even if you miss you’ll land among the stars”.  Although when I think about it, stars are farther away than the moon, so you would actually be landing in the clouds, and if clouds are how I imagine them to be(unfortunately they aren’t) that would be a cushy landing.  Not so bad.  I’m rambling.  The point is to dream BIG!

Deskpiration

Is that a play on Desk Inspiration or Desk Desperation?  I guess if you are going on the spelling it would be the former.  Now thinking on it, two seconds after typing that title it seems a little silly, but whatever I’m sticking with it.

I have been on the hunt for a desk that fits my two needs, 1.storage and 2.fits the aesthetic of my apartment.  Not that my apartment has any certain aesthetic, except eclectic, but its sounds cooler to say.  The desk I have been using to sew/craft/and do all sorts of other things is a cheap particle board/metal desk that I got in college.  I have outgrown it and have been on the hunt at all my local thrift stores for a new one.

I was perusing Etsy and found a desirable few.  Take a looksee….

Steel Top Desk and File Cabinet

This desk from Todd Manring Designs looks like it has oodles of storage.  Just look at all those compartments.

Mid Century Desk

We have no mid century furniture in our apartment, but I still think this desk by Salvage Theory is pretty sharp!

Aula Desk 32"

Even though it doesn’t have all the storage I am looking for, I love the design and color of this desk by StorNewYork.

Hopefully I stumble upon a real gem this weekend.  Later, Molly.

Concrete Table D.I.Y.

0512131223

So I was perusing through Apartment Therapy when I came across a post for this stool that I thought looked pretty nifty.  But I wasn’t really in need of a stool so I forgot about it.

Until a couple weeks ago.  R and I have been looking for a round side table to put in between our couch and chair.  Try as we might, we haven’t been able to find one at the thrift stores.  And I’m most certainly not about to pay nearly $100 for a new one.  Mama don’t play that game.  So I thought we have to make one.  That’s when it hit me, let’s turn that stool into a table.

The original tutorial used a 5 gallon bucket, but we needed something bigger.  I rummaged through my parents garage and found a tub that they used to put drinks in at my high school graduation party.  Talk about repurposing, that tub is now being used as a pot for my fledgling tomato plant.

0505131336Here is what it looked like right out of the tub.

Anywho, we used the same concrete, but made our legs longer.  We also stained the wood legs instead of dip painting them.

05091321080512131224aI must say that we are both pleased with how it turned out.

P.S. The lamp in the photos is a $12 find from a thrift store.  Not too shaby.  I want to change up the shade a bit.  Any suggestions?

Beautiful Inspiration

05011319390430131217a05011312140501131939aWhen Spring rolls around it is so easy to find yourself surrounded by beauty.  Some of these images were taken during walks on my lunch break and others are from my backyard and by backyard I mean the parking lot outside of my apartment.  Regardless there is beauty all around if we take the time to notice.  In turn we can find inspiration and gratitude in the little things.  Even though it’s raining at this exact moment, I’m still calling it a beautiful day because that’s just the mood I’m in.

Stay posi my friends!

Thrift Store Score

Yes, I am considering this a score.  $29 for a antique sewing table qualifies as such.  The machine still sews, and the table is in great condition.

I already have a sewing machine, sew….(pun intended) I don’t think I will use the machine that much, unless I’m feeling very “Betty”(There is a great book called the Betty Book that I love to read from time to time.  Check it out if you can.)  We are using the table as a front entryway table, since we don’t have an entryway.  It acts as a handsome catchall for our keys and mail.

I am still super stoked over this find.

Deconstruct to Reconstruct

Sounds like a slogan!  Here are some progress shots.

Hand dyed and deconstructed jeans to repurpose into bags.  I even salvaged the zippers to use for pockets.

This week is going to be super busy, so I really have to put my nose to the grindstone.  Wish me loads of energy!

To Mom, With Love

0428131427b

If you recall, my sister purchased a cross-body satchel(I get a kick out of that word) that I admired.  I couldn’t get enough of all the pockets.  So with an old pair of men’s short shorts I created my own.

Well it just so happened that our Mom loved the bag as well.  She searched high and low, but nary a purse was found.  To be honest I don’t know how hard she looked, but she couldn’t find one.  This is were I came in.  I figured I would make one for her, using salvaged material.

The leather is from an old jacket I found at Goodwill and the lining is from a thrifted skirt.  When I gave it to my Mom she exclaimed “Oh I have been looking for a bag like this!  Thank you.  You did a really good job.”  So I think it’s safe to say she likes it, and not just because her daughter made it.

Pretty Flowers

A little bit of pretty, to brighten up your day.

DSCF1824

R surprised me with a spring mix.  Simple yet beautiful.  I love wildflowers, and bouquets of mixed flowers.  He sure does know how to put a smile on this gal’s face.
